The Guide To Lake Wedowee

A great resource for learning about the beautiful area we call home.
R L Harris Dam
Lake Wedowee,  a 10,666 acre lake is composed of clean, pure waters in Randolph County, Alabama. The lake surrounded in natural beauty in East Alabama offers a peaceful rural setting and small town charm.

Construction of R.L. Harris Reservoir, as it is officially known, began in 1974 and was completed in 1982 as a hydroelectric site for the Alabama Power Company. Considered a mountain lake with a summer pool elevation of 793, Lake Wedowee is fed by the Tallapoosa River and the Little Tallapoosa River and boasts a maximum depth of 135 feet and 272 miles of picturesque  shoreline.

State and Federal Conservation Services rank Lake Wedowee among the cleanest lakes in this part of the country.  Further, recreation opportunities abound. The Alabama Department of Conservation names the lake as one of the top three in Alabama for fishing, drawing anglers from near and far.

Just one of the many attractions to Lake Wedowee is Flat Rock Park, managed by Alabama Power. Flat Rock, also known as the Blakes Ferry pluton, is granite rock and was formed similarly to Stone Mountain in Georgia. Beginning in early spring, the park is open seven days a week and is perfect for a picnic on the lake. There are fishing and swimming areas as well as pavilions available which may be reserved.
